  • We’re making it an annual tradition!

    Date: 2013.11.04 | Category: faith | Response: 0

Last year our family had such a great trip to Arbol de Vida, that we decided to do it again!  We will be driving down on Nov 22 and returning on Nov 28, just in time for Thanksgiving dinner.  We are so excited that most of the families who joined us last year are returning this year, and we are excited to welcome at least one new family on our adventure. Our kids have talked nonstop about returning to Juarez since our last trip- and they’ve had a countdown going for months!  It was one of the highlights of last year, and we are so glad that we will be able to do it again.

We are humbly asking for donations to help us cover the cost of our trip, and to provide for some of the needs at the orphanage.  As we did last year, we plan to bring a complete Thanksgiving dinner to share with everyone at the orphanage.  Our out of pocket expenses will include gas and two night’s motel stay.  We have a pretty extensive list of items that we’d like to provide for the orphanage (kitchen utensils, window and shower curtains and rods, toiletries and clothes for the kids) and we would like to bring a van full of supplies down with us again.  While we are there, we have several construction projects on our list, and I’m also planning a few crafts, including pillowcases that each student can decorate, desk organizers, and some type of chalk/bulletin board (since the walls are all cinderblock and hard to personalize!). We also always want to be sure that we leave enough money at the orphanage to cover our food and other expenses while we stay with them.

In addition to bringing items that the orphanage needs with us, this year we plan to interview each student and put together personal Christmas wish lists.  Our hope is to then pair each student from Arbol de Vida with a student from South Fellowship Church, who can pray for that student and provide some of the requested items to him or her for Christmas.  A group from South Fellowship will be visiting Arbol de Vida the week after Christmas and will hand deliver the gifts.

As was the case last year, safety is always a factor, and we appreciate your prayers for the long drive and for our time in Mexico.  While we were there last year we stayed within the compound for our entire visit and never felt unsafe, but it is always a concern.  We also ask for prayers for our time with the students, that they would know God’s love through us and that we would quickly connect with them and build relationships with them.  We hope to be an encouragement to them and to remind them that they are not forgotten and that their lives matter!

In addition to monetary donations, we are collecting donations of new socks and underclothes in sizes appropriate for teenagers, full size toiletries, and rugs and floor mats.  All donations can be sent directly to us.  We hope to receive all donations prior to Nov 15-
